Liverpool Defeats Burnley 2-0 at Anfield in Front of a Raucous Crowd
Liverpool vs Burnley
For the first time in nearly 18 months, Liverpool defeated Burnley 2-0 at Anfield on Saturday, with goals from Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane giving the Reds their second straight win to begin the season. In the 18th minute, Jota, who scored the opening goal in Liverpool's 3-0 win over Norwich the previous weekend, glanced in a header off a cross by left-back Konstantinos Tsimikas in front of The Kop.
After a deft pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mane scored in the 69th minute with a powerful, low shot from a central position. Since the last full house at Anfield in March 2020, Liverpool has won the league title for the first time in 30 years, but it has since been relinquished to Manchester City.
So there was a party atmosphere for what turned out to be a routine win over Burnley, which had won a shock victory in the same fixture last season to end Liverpool's 68-game unbeaten run at Anfield.
There was also time for reflection, with Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson laying a wreath in memory of Andrew Devine, who recently became the 97th victim of the Hillsborough stadium disaster in 1989. A minute's silence was observed, as well as a mosaic of the numbers "97" on The Kop. Devine's name has been added to a walkway outside Anfield.
Burnley used a lineup with squad numbers 1-11, which is unusual in modern football. It was the first time it had happened in the Premier League since 1998, according to British broadcaster BT Sport.
Andrew Robertson, who has recovered from a minor ankle ligament injury, will take Tsimikas' place in the lineup. Jota was assisted by a pinpoint delivery into the penalty box, where he got in front of Burnley centre back Ben Mee and guided a low header past goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Mohamed Salah, who needed two goals to reach 100 in the Premier League after only four seasons, had a goal disallowed midway through the first half for a narrow offside, after which Mane volleyed over from another pass from Alexander-Arnold.
Burnley was dangerous on the break and off set pieces - from one long free-kick, James Tarkowski beat Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson in the air but headed just wide from the edge of the area - but was subjected to wave after wave of home attacks in the second half.
Salah's near-line shot was cleared by Dwight McNeil, and Mane had a low effort saved by Pope's feet, who couldn't do much about Senegal forward's thumping shot to make it 2-0. It came at the end of a sweeping Liverpool move that included a long ball forward by Virgil van Dijk, who returned from injury and played the entire game, and some neat touches by young midfielder Harvey Elliott, who also played 90 minutes.
