Samuel Kalu of Nigeria; Collapses During Ligue 1 Match in France.

Bordeaux striker Samuel Kalu collapsed on the field during a Ligue 1 match in Marseille on Sunday, where temperatures reached a scorching 30 degrees.

In the early stages of the match, the 23-year-old Nigerian international fainted and slumped to the Stade Velodrome surface.

Concerned teammates gathered around the injured Kalu, frantically waving their hands to the bench to summon medical assistance.

Despite his recovery, Kalu did not complete the match after briefly returning. In the 14th minute, he was replaced by Rémi Oudin due to an abundance of caution. The immediate cause of his collapse was unknown, but the game was being played in scorching heat in Marseille.

The incident occurred just two months after Denmark's Christian Eriksen collapsed during a Euro 2020 match.

“Kalu's incident gave us goosebumps. It's always a bit shocking for the spectators and the players on the field,” said Oudin, who went on to score in the 2-2 tie.

“We consider what happened with Eriksen at the Euros. Everyone became a little terrified. Fortunately, everything worked out in the end. According to the doctors, it's just a minor ailment, but he'll be tested on Monday.”

Kalu was hospitalized in June 2019 after becoming dehydrated while training with Nigeria in the Egyptian heat during the Africa Cup of Nations.

“I was thinking about what happened during the Euro,” Bordeaux coach Vladimir Petkovic admitted.

“With the medical team, we decided to replace him so that no risks were taken. Football takes a back seat in these situations.”
